Why do you want to be rich?

Every now and then, you will hear people say, “I wish I could be wealthy someday.”

You will hear your coworkers say, “Sana manalo ako sa lotto.”

These statements, on the outside, might seem like people want to be rich. But this same group of people will say, “Di bale nang hindi mayaman basta masaya at walang inaapakan.”

Some would even say, “Makakain lang kami ng tatlong beses sa isang araw, masaya na kami.”

This same person would have no money to bring his sick child to the hospital. This same person would not be able to send his kids to school because they don’t even have money for their food. This same person would acquire as much debt as he could to provide for his family. Then this same person would say, “Masaya na kami sa simpleng buhay.”*

A simple life doesn’t have to mean having to worry about money every time there is an emergency. A simple life doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your kids’ education. A simple life doesn’t have to mean not being able to provide for your parents’ medication. A simple life doesn’t have to mean growing old and having no money to use when you retire.

You can aspire to be wealthy and still live the “simple” life that you always wanted. You could earn more, so you could give more. It isn’t wrong to aspire to be rich when you have the “right reasons”. Maybe you want to provide for your sibling’s education. Maybe you want to give back to your parents. Maybe you want to have money to help a friend when he is in need. Maybe you want to send your kids to the school of your choice so they could experience a better life than you did. Maybe you just want to donate to the poor.

The reasons could be endless. The reasons may vary from person to person. The important thing to understand is aspiring to be rich doesn’t mean being a greedy person. Money is just a tool. It could be used for good things or bad things. The difference lies on the person holding it.

If bad people will be the ones going after the wealth of the world, you can be sure it will be used for bad things. But if more kindhearted people will enrich themselves so they can give more, you can be certain that the world will be a much better place.
